Autograph String Block

Materials Needed:    8 1/2" Foundation ( see below)
                                   2"x 12 1/2" WHITE muslin strip
Various RED and BLUE 'strings' ranging from 1" - 2 1/2" wide
(These do not necessarily all have to be patriotic fabrics, as all Red and Blue
fabrics of any pattern look great together.  Do not use white anywhere, except in
                                   center strip.

Start with an 8 1/2" foundation.
A great paper foundation is a page from the White Pages of the phone book.
(don't use yellow pages; the ink smears easily).  Cut your page to measure 8 1/2"

Draw a line diagonally on one side.  Next fold a 2" x 12 1/2" WHITE muslin strip lengthwise
and lightly crease.  Use this crease as your guide, as you align your crease along the drawn line, as shown:
Pin in place.
Next, with right sides together, place a 'string' on top of the white strip, aligning outer raw edges. Be sure to leave at least 1/2" beyond foundation edge.  Sitch 1/4" seam.
Flip open and press flat.
Continue adding strings to each side by sewing and flipping open to press.
When block is completely covered, turn it over, and using the paper as your guide, trim your block to 8 1/2".

Sign your block with a PERMANENT FABRIC MARKER (no regular ink, please!!!):
