Make Flying Geese by placing (2) 3 3/8” RED squares on top of (1) 6 ¼” GOLD square, right sides together, as shown. (Red blocks will slightly overlap). Draw a diagonal line from top left corner to bottom right corner.  Sew scant ¼” on each side of drawn line.  Cut apart on line, and press to Red.
Next place a 3 3/8” RED square, right sides together, as shown below. Draw a diagonal line, and stitch a scant ¼” on each side of drawn line. Cut apart on line.  Flip red corners back and press to red.  Each 6 ¼” Gold square and (4) 3 3/8” red squares will yield 4 flying geese.  You need 8 for this project.                         Repeat process for a total of 8.

Next make Gold/Blue Flying Geese using the above method, except use 3 3/8” BLUE squares.

Assemble Star Blocks as shown below, using (1) 2 ½” x 10 ½” GOLD strip, (1) 2 ½” x 12 ½” GOLD strip, (4) 3” x 3” GOLD squares, (1) 5 ½” RED or BLUE square, and (4) Flying Geese units.
  
  Make TWO Red Star Blocks            and      TWO Blue Star Blocks

Your blocks should measure 12 1/2"
Sew your Star Blocks together, as shown, being careful of placement. Rotate blocks until it matches illustration below:
Make 1
Next place (1) 5 ½” x 5 ½” CREAM square on top of (1) 5 ½” x 5 ½” RED square, right sides together. Sew ¼” on each side of the drawn line.  Cut apart, and press to Red.    Make 26 Half Square Triangles HST, using (13)  5 ½” RED  and  (13) 5 ½” CREAM squares.
You do not need to square up.     Make 26 (you need 25 for this pattern)    LABEL:  “Z-CR”

Repeat above process with (1) 5 ½” x 5 ½” CREAM and (1) 5 ½” x 5 ½” BLUE squares.
Make 26 HST.  (you need 25 for this pattern)                                                LABEL: “Z-CB”

Next make Quarter Square Triangles (QST) using (1) Z-CR-unit  and  (1) Z-CB-unit.
Place a Z-CR-unit on top of a Z-CB-unit,  right sides together.  Make sure the Red and Blue fabrics are opposite each other.  Draw a diagonal line, and sew ¼” on each side of this drawn line.  Cut apart on line, and press open.  Square up to 4 ½”                                                                 LABEL: “Y”

Make 50
Place (1) 5 ½” x 5 ½” CREAM on top of (1) 5 ½” x 5 ½” BLUE square, right sides together. Sew ¼” on each side of drawn line.  Cut apart, and press to Blue.   Square up to 5”.                     LABEL:  “X”
Make 4
Repeat process to make RED HST “X-units”
Make 4
Next place (1) 5” x 5” CREAM square on top of (1) X-unit.  Sew ¼” on each side of drawn line.  Cut apart, and press to cream.

                             You will only use the units that look exactly like above. Discard others (or use them to
make a label).     Square up to 4 ½”                   Make 4 of each color.
