Make Flying Geese by placing (2) 3 3/8” RED squares on top of (1) 6 ¼” GOLD square, right sides together, as shown. (Red blocks will slightly overlap). Draw a diagonal line from top left corner to bottom right corner. Sew scant ¼” on each side of drawn line. Cut apart on line, and press to Red.
Next place a 3 3/8” RED square, right sides together, as shown below. Draw a diagonal line, and stitch a scant ¼” on each side of drawn line. Cut apart on line. Flip red corners back and press to red. Each 6 ¼” Gold square and (4) 3 3/8” red squares will yield 4 flying geese. You need 8 for this project. Repeat process for a total of 8.
Next make Gold/Blue Flying Geese using the above method, except use 3 3/8” BLUE squares.
Assemble Star Blocks as shown below, using (1) 2 ½” x 10 ½” GOLD strip, (1) 2 ½” x 12 ½” GOLD strip, (4) 3” x 3” GOLD squares, (1) 5 ½” RED or BLUE square, and (4) Flying Geese units.
Make TWO Red Star Blocks and TWO Blue Star Blocks
Your blocks should measure 12 1/2"
Sew your Star Blocks together, as shown, being careful of placement. Rotate blocks until it matches illustration below:
Next place (1) 5 ½” x 5 ½” CREAM square on top of (1) 5 ½” x 5 ½” RED square, right sides together. Sew ¼” on each side of the drawn line. Cut apart, and press to Red. Make 26 Half Square Triangles HST, using (13) 5 ½” RED and (13) 5 ½” CREAM squares.
You do not need to square up. Make 26 (you need 25 for this pattern) LABEL: “Z-CR”
Repeat above process with (1) 5 ½” x 5 ½” CREAM and (1) 5 ½” x 5 ½” BLUE squares.
Make 26 HST. (you need 25 for this pattern) LABEL: “Z-CB”
Next make Quarter Square Triangles (QST) using (1) Z-CR-unit and (1) Z-CB-unit.
Place a Z-CR-unit on top of a Z-CB-unit, right sides together. Make sure the Red and Blue fabrics are opposite each other. Draw a diagonal line, and sew ¼” on each side of this drawn line. Cut apart on line, and press open. Square up to 4 ½” LABEL: “Y”
Place (1) 5 ½” x 5 ½” CREAM on top of (1) 5 ½” x 5 ½” BLUE square, right sides together. Sew ¼” on each side of drawn line. Cut apart, and press to Blue. Square up to 5”. LABEL: “X”
Repeat process to make RED HST “X-units”
Next place (1) 5” x 5” CREAM square on top of (1) X-unit. Sew ¼” on each side of drawn line. Cut apart, and press to cream.
You will only use the units that look exactly like above. Discard others (or use them to
make a label). Square up to 4 ½” Make 4 of each color.
