With right sides together, place a 4 ½” WHITE square on top of a 4 ½” RED square.  Sew scant ¼” seams on each side of drawn line. 

Cut apart, and press to dark. Square up your HST to 3 ½”.

Sew a 3 ½” WHITE square to both sides of above HST.

Next sew a RED/WHITE HST on each end of a 3 ½” RED square as shown:

Assemble a RED FRIENDSHIP STAR using the above units as shown:

Sew a 2” x 9 ½” BLUE strip to each side of RED Friendship Star, then sew a 2” x 12 ½” BLUE strip to top and bottom of each block.

Make 4.     Your block should measure 12 1/2"

Sew a 2” x 2 ½” RED strip to the end of a 2” x 7 ½” WHITE strip.  Press to dark.

Next repeat process, but change placement of the 2 ½” squares, as shown:

Assemble your Alphabet Letter S as shown:

Next frame your Alphabet Letter S by sewing a 2” x 9 ½” BLUE strip to each side, then a 2” x 12 ½” BLUE strip to top and bottom of block.            Your blocks should measure 12 ½”.

With right sides together, place a 4 ½” WHITE square on top of a 4 ½” BLUE square.  Sew scant ¼” seam on both sides of drawn line, cut apart, press to dark.

Square up your HST to 3 ½”                                                             LABEL:  “X”

NOTE:  There was an error on the cutting instructions.  You should have cut (34) 2 1/2" x 9 1/2" RED, instead of 23.               Sorry for this inconvenience!

Place a 2 ½” WHITE square, right sides together, on a 2 ½” x 9 ½” RED strip, as shown:

Sew on diagonal line, trim seam allowance to ¼”, flip back and press.

Repeat on the other end of RED strip, being careful of placement, as shown
